The Sewing Machine

Have you ever wondered who invented the first sewing machine and when it was first patented? How has the sewing machine changed throughout the years and who has helped to perfect it?

Answer all these questions and find out more about the sewing machine with the links provided in this post.

Activity idea: Sew your own bean bag and make up a game with it. The bean bag can be a simple square, circle, or another shape. Use an old article of clothing or some scrap material for this project.

You will need a needle and thread, dried beans or rice, and whatever other items you need for your game. A sewing machine can be used for most of the sewing part, but a needle and thread will be needed to finish it off after the beans/rice have been added.

Helpful Tips:

  • Use a heavy material (an old T-shirt) when you make your bag, or the beans/rice may fall out.
  • Place a plastic zip-top bag in the fabric covering, add beans/rice, close it up, then finish sewing the opening.
  • Use the link provided to learn the basics of sewing.
