Wind, How Is It Measured?

Use the following questions to help research wind, then use the experiment suggestions below to do some measuring and observing of your own.

What is wind?

Where does it come from?

How is wind measured?

What types of winds are there?

Where can they be found?

What effects wind?

Why is wind measured?

What tools are used to measure wind speed and direction?

Wind Experiments

Keep track of dangerous/severe wind events that happen around the world and how they effect the people and areas: Tornadoes, Hurricanes, Wind Chills, Gales, Squalls, etc..

Measure wind with your own:

Anemometer, barometer, weather vane, or windsock

What is in the wind? Find out by making a wind trap.

Observe the sound of wind for yourself.

Observe wind and its effects. Go outdoors to observe and then watch from a window. How are animals and plants effected? How are you effected? Compare your experiences.

Seasonal Recipe Challenge: Oatmeal Packet

This is meant to be an open-ended activity. No recipe is given, but suggestions and tips are offered. It is strongly recommended that you record what you do in some way:

Video, writing, drawing, etc..

Tweak your recipe as needed, and when you come up with something you like, write it down in a homemade recipe book or on an index cards.

You will need: A packet or two of instant oatmeal

Tips

· Quick oats may also be used for this activity, but a little more liquid may be needed for a recipe to work.

· The average oatmeal packet requires between 1/2 to 2/3c of water to make oatmeal. Try using about the same amount of liquid (eggs, milk, water, cream, etc.) when making your recipe.

· Think about how you will cook your creation before you begin: Bake, frying, a fun new flavored oatmeal

· Consider making a dough or batter.

· Use small pans for oven baked goods.

Flour Raisins Eggs Banana Baking Powder Baking Soda

Chocolate Chips Salt Vanilla Sugar Butter Nuts Fruit

Milk Peanut Butter (any type) Pumpkin Yogurt Coconut

Nutritional Yeast Jelly/Jam Something of your own choice

Hot Cocoa Recipe Idea

Do you have a favorite hot cocoa recipe that you like to make? If not, this link has one you can try and tweak to make it a little more special.

If you would rather not make your own cocoa, use a commercial brand you enjoy.

If you decide to invite a few friends over for cocoa and a movie or game, consider making a cocoa bar filled with some of the suggestions below.

Fun treats to add:

Marshmallows – Peanut Butter – Flavored Creamer – Chocolate Chips ( or any flavor baking chip)

A Mint or Candy Cane – Carmel Candy – Toffee Candy – Almond Joy or Mounds

And anything else you can think of.

Ask your guests to bring a favorite treat to share.

If you invite friends, ask if they have a special diet that they follow so you can have an alternative beverage, treat, sweetener, milk, etc. or ask them what they would like you to provide for them.

If someone doesn’t eat candy or sweets, cinnamon and whipped heavy cream without sweetener may be nice to offer. Don’t forget the unsweetened cocoa powder or cocoa mass.

Buttons come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, and colors. They can be purchased at garage sales and craft stores.

If you purchase them from a garage sale, check an antique/collectables book because some are worth quite a bit of money.

Button Craft Ideas

Use a variety of buttons and plastic coated wire to make a puppet or a doll.

Turn an old sock into a puppet by adding buttons to the face, for a necklace, and other things.

Hot glue buttons together to make flowers, butterflies, fish, and other creative items.

Use them to decorate a frame, pillow, clothing, and other fun things.

Glue buttons randomly to a piece of poster board or white cardboard and incorporate them into a picture or doodle.

How many different types of cats can you think of? On a piece of paper or an electronic device, write the letters A-Z down one side. Then fill in the letters with the names of domestic cat types.
